In other countries such as Australia women take up 7% of the prison population, which has drastically increased since 2002(Greene).
When looking at statistics of incarcerated mothers done by the Prison Policy Initiative, their study shows that 2,879,000 women are incarcerated a year, and of these almost three million women, 80% of them are mothers(Prison Policy Initiative).
Since 1985 the population of women in prisons has risen roughly 11% each year (Greene).
" I would say we start to be the change these mothers need by being a shoulder for them to lean on, an ally for them to look to, and a source for them to get ever changing information from." - Victoria Cipriani, founder and creator
